Penal Code section 597, subdivision (a), which prohibits cruelty to animals,applies to rodents, even though they are animals which may be killed at any time as a health hazard. It is one thing to trap or poison a health hazard; it is still another to make “crush” videos in which the animals are slowly maimed, mutilated, and tortured until death for the purpose of making and selling videos to arouse fetishists.
