Defendant had been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (formerly know as multiple personality disorder) and had kidnapped and attacked the psychiatric nurse who had treated him in prison and for the two years since his release. The trial court’s refusal to allow defendant and the victim to testify regarding his state of mind (specifically that one of his alternate personalities perpetrated the assault as the result of his mental disorder) violated his Sixth Amendment right to present a defense.
